Stitch Pattern Sampler Blanket

Each time I open a stitch dictionary, I see a new stitch pattern that I want to try. There are so many possible textures that can be created with crochet – the combinations are endless. This blanket was inspired by a series of swatches worked in the summer of 2011, a summer which seemed to also include a parade of new babies in my circle of family and friends. Since I spend a lot of time crocheting on the go while my kids climb on the playground, I decided that a blanket made up of squares that could fit in my bag was the best strategy for being productive. The blanket as designed is made up of 24 squares using 4 colors and 6 different stitch patterns. If you need a larger blanket for a bigger kid or for yourself, all you need to do is make more squares!Pattern Writing: The directions for each square is both written in words and charted. A close up of each completed square is included in the pattern as well.

Required Skills:
Basic crochet stitches, a variety of decrease stitches, a spike stitch, a bobble and crocheting into the back loop.

Gauge:
The prescribed number of stitches and length in the pattern should produce a square that is 5” (13 cm) x 5” (13 cm) pre-blocking. To open up and relax the stitch patterns, each square should be blocked to 5.5” (14 cm) x 5.5” (14 cm).

It would also be possible to produce larger squares by using a larger hook or make smaller squares using a smaller hook and thinner yarn. As long as all of the squares are blocked to the same size, the blanket will work out well.

Yarn:
Sample is shown in Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece. Based on a few swatches I’ve made, good substitutions would be Cascade 220 Superwash, Dream in Color Classy, or your favorite washable worsted weight wool, wool-blend, cotton-blend or acrylic yarn.

Enjoy!
